COLLEGE SOFTBALL: WAVERLY GRAD MENNING OFF TO RED-HOT START IN SOPHOMORE SEASON AT CORNING CC (2017-04-07)

Valley Sports Report
CORNING — Corning had its five-game win streak snapped Tuesday in a doubleheader loss to Potomac State College in NJCAA softball action.

Waverly grad Sam Mennig, a sophomore for the Lady Red Barons, took the loss in the second game of the twinbill despite seven strong innings in the pitcher’s circle and a good day at the plate.

Mennig allowed two runs — one earned — on nine hits, while striking out seven and walking one. At the plate, Mennig stroked three singles and drove in Croning’s only run.

During the Lady Red Barons’ five-game win streak, Mennig had four multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit games. She hit .611 (11 hits in 18 ABs), with three doubles, one home run, nine RBI and seven runs scored.

She also earned her first win of the season in Croning’s 18-1 win over Montgomery College. She threw three hitless innings, while striking out six and walking win.

For the season, Mennig is hitting .556 (15 hits in 27 at-bats) with three doubles, two home runs, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored. She has struck out just once and walked twice.

In the circle, Mennig is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA and a team-high 22 innings pitched. She has fanned 24 and walked 10.

Defensively, she has handled all 25 chances in the field flawlessly.

Tioga grad Paige Hendershot, a freshman, has appeared in three games. She is 0-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored.

Corning, now 6-3 on the season, returns to action Saturday at Herkimer CC.
