CORNING — Waverly grad Sam Mennig, a sophomore on the Corning Community College softball team, recently put the finishing touches on a strong second season with the Lady Red Barons.
Corning CC had it last five games canceled due to the weather, but won six of its last seven prior to that to end the season with a 25-6 record. It will host Monroe Community College Tuesday in the Region III semifinals.
The Lady Red Barons swept Cayuga CC in a doubleheader last week by scores of 12-3 and 8-0 in what would be their final regular-season games of the season.
in the opener, Mennig doubled and singled, scored a run, and had three RBI at the plate.
She also earned her ninth win in the pitcher’s circle this season. She allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits, while striking out six and walking two.
in nightcap Mennig smacked a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had an RBI in an 8-0 win.
During the regular season, Mennig led the Lady Red Barons in hitting with a .533 batting average. She led the team with 52 runs scored, 56 hits, 18 doubles, and nine home runs, and was second on the team with 43 RBI.
She also led the team with a .962 slugging percentage and was third on the team with a .559 on-base percentage. Mennig struck out just four times in 111 plate appearances.
Mennig also led the team with a 9-3 record, 76 innings pitched and 69 strikeouts. She posted a 3.68 ERA.
Tioga grad Paige Hendershot, a freshman, hit .278 on the season (5 hits in 18 ABs) with a double, 13 runs scored, five RBI, and a stolen base. She was also flawless in the field in 12 games.
Game time against Monroe CC Tuesday is 3 p.m. The teams split a pair of games in late April.
