VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: SAYRE'S PORTER NAMED "GIRLS SWIMMER OF THE YEAR" FOR FOURTH TIME (2014-03-12)

THE VALLEY Sayre senior Katherine Porter joined an elite club recently when she qualified for her fourth trip to the PIAA Championships. She has also become the first-time four-time winner of the Valley Sports Report's "Girls Swimmer of the Year."

Porter qualified for States by winning the District 4 title in the 100-yard butterfly. She also placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Porter was also part of the fifth-place 200 free and eighth-place 200 medley relays for the Lady Redskins at Districts.

At the NTL Championships, she won the 100 butterfly and was on the second-place 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relay teams. She also placed third in the 50 free.

Porter holds school records in the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle and is on the school-record 400-yard freestyle relay

She reached the 100-win milestone in her junior year and topped the 1,000-point barrier this year.

The remainder of the "All-Valley Super 7" girls swim team is:

Samantha Goble, senior, Waverly: Goble capped a stellar career with the Lady Wolverines by placing in four events at the Section IV, Class C Championships.

She was third in the 100 free and fourth in 200 free, while also swimming on the fifth-place 400-yard free relay and sixth-place 200 free relay teams

At the IAC Championships, Goble was third in 500 free and fifth in the 200 free. She was also on a 400 relay that finished fourth and a 200 free relay that finished fifth.

Courtney Dukes, sophomore, Athens: Dukes played a big part in a successful season for the Lady Wildcats.

At the District 4 meet, Dukes was third in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle.

She was also part of the fourth-place 200 free relay and sixth-place 200 medley relays.

Taylor Lane, freshman, Athens: Lane set a school record in the first individual event the 200 IM she swam in a varsity event.

Lane was part of the fourth-place 200 free and sixth-place 200 medley relays for the Lady Wildcats at the District 4 Championships.

She also finished seventh in IM and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.

At the NTL Championships, Lane was on the winning 200-yard medley relay. She was also second in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly.

Grace McClelland, senior, Sayre:
McClelland placed in three events in her final trip to the District 4 meet.

She was on the fifth-place 200-yard free relay and the 200-yard medley relay for the Lady Redskins. She also finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle.

At the NTL Championships, McClelland was on the winning 200-yard free relay and the second-place 200-yard medley relay. She also finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle.

Katie Phykitt, freshman, Athens: In her first visit to the District 4 meet, Phykitt placed on a pair of relays.

She was part of the fourth-place 200 free and sixth-place 200 medley relays for the Lady Wildcats.

At the NTL Championships, Phykitt was on the winning 200-yard medley relay and on the second-place 200 free relay. She was also fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Daylen Smith, junior, Waverly: Smith placed in four events at the Section IV, Class C Championships.

Smith was third in the 500-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200-yard free for the Lady Wolverines. She was also on the fifth-place 400-yard free and sixth-place 200 free relay teams.

At the IAC Championships, Smith was fifth in 500 free and fourth in the 200 free, while also swimming on Waverly's 400 relay that finished fourth and 200 free relay that finished fifth.

Divers of the Year:
Sarah Slocum and Cheyanne Northrup, Athens:
Slocum was undefeated in dual match-ups this season and won the NTL Diving Championships.

Northrup finished sixth in her first trip to the the District 4 Diving Championships. She was second at the NTL Championships.

Relay of Year
The Waverly 200 free relay team of Samantha Goble, Daylen Smith, Megan Stanton and Sage Burt  finished sixth at the Section IV, Class C Championships in a Valley-best time of 1:52.42.

Runner-up: The Athens foursome of Katie Phykitt, Maggie Cole, Taylor Lane and Courtney Dukes finished fourth in the District 4 meet in a time of 1:53.54.
