VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S MASTRANTUONO EARNS "SWIMMER OF THE YEAR" HONORS — SAYRE'S McCLELLAND TOP NEWCOMER (2015-03-13)

THE VALLEY — Waverly junior Josh Mastrantuono qualified for the New York State Championships in three events and turned in a record-setting performance at the IAC Championships, earning the Valley Sports Report 2014-15 boys “Swimmer of the Year.”

After a dominating regular season, Mastrantuono was a triple-winner at the IAC meet, including a new school and new Waverly pool record in the 50-yard freestyle. He also set a new IAC Championship record in the 100-yard breaststroke.

At the Section IV, Class C meet, Mastrantuono won two gold medals. He swam a personal-best 48.42 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and also won the 100-yard breaststroke. He was also part of a second-place relay in 400-yard free relay and was on the third-place in 200-yard medley medley

At States, Mastrantuono was 29th in 100-yard breaststroke and 36th in 50-yard freestyle. He also qualified for States in the 100-yard freestyle.

Sayre freshman Caleb McClelland medalled at the District 4 Championships, placing fifth in the 500-yard freestyle and is the 2014-15 “Newcomer of the Year.” He also finished 15th in the 100-yard backstroke.

McClelland was also a double-winner at the NTL meet. He won the 500-yard freestyle and was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Tyler Solomon, senior, Athens: Tyler Solomon qualified for the PIAA Championships, finishing 21st in the 100-yard breaststroke.

He was a triple-winner at the NTL meet.  He was part of the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays and won the 100-yard breaststroke. He was second in the 200-yard IM.

At the District 4 Championships, Tyler Solomon finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke and later earned a wild card berth to the PIAA meet. He was part of the second-place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays and was also on the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay.

Bryan Solomon, junior, Athens: Bryan Solomon, who was MVP of the Valley Invite, was a triple-winner at the NTL Championships. He was part of the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays and also won the 100-yard butterfly. He was second in the 50-yard freestyle.

At the District 4 meet, Bryan Solomon was part of the second-place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays and was also on the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay. He finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Jeffrey Gao, sophomore, Athens: Gao was a quad-winner at the NTL Championships, swimming on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, while also winning the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

At the District 4 meet, Gao was on the second-place 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, as well as the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay. He finished third place in 100-yard backstroke.

Gary Moorehead, junior, Waverly: Moorehead brought home four medals from the IAC Championships. He was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay and on the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay. He was third in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard backstroke.

At the Section IV, Class C Championships, Moorehead medalled in a pair of relay, swimming on the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay and on the third-place 200-yard medley relay. He finished fourth in the 100-yard and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Mitchel Ward, junior, Sayre: Ward was a double-winner at the NTL Championships. He won the 100-yard freestyle and was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

At the District 4 meet, Ward finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. He also swam on the eighth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and the ninth-place 200-yard medley relay.

Brandon Whitley, senior, Waverly: Whitley earned three medals at the IAC Championships. He was on the gold-medal winning 400-yard freestyle relay and on the third-place 200-yard medley relay and finished third in the 200-yard IM. He also finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.

At the Section IV, Class C meet, Whitley was on the gold-medal winning 400-yard freestyle relay. He also finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM.

RELAY OF THE YEAR: The Athens 200-yard medley foursome of Jeff Gao,Tyler Solomon, Bryan Solomon and Austin Dukes finished second at the District 4 Championships in a time of 1:44.75. They also won gold at the NTL meet.

DIVER OF THE YEAR: Athens sophomore Jared Firestine won gold at the NTL Championships, then finished fifth at District 4 meet.
