VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' LANE HEADLINES 'ALL-VALLEY SUPER 7' AS 'FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE YEAR' — SAYRE'S KITTLE TOP NEWCOMER (2016-03-22)

THE VALLEY — Athens junior Taylor Lane qualified for the PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships with a school-record performance at the District 4 Championships and has been named the 2015-16 Valley Sports Report “Female Swimmer of the Year.”

Lane, who broke the school record the school record in the 200 IM at Athens the first time she dove in the pool as a freshman, finished fifth at the District 4 meet in the 100-yard backstroke with a school-record time of 1:01.96. She finished sixth in the IM in a time of 2:20.85.

Lane also swam on a pair of medal-winning relays at Districts that both set school records.

Lane was a four-time winner at the NTL Championships and a four-time winner at the Valley Christmas Meet.

At States, Lane finished 31st in the backstroke.

RELAY OF THE YEAR: The third Athens relay at the District 4 meet to set a school record was the foursome of  juniors Maggie Cole and Katie Phykitt and seniors Courtney Dukes and Sarah Cuno. They swam to a third-place finish in a time of 1:49.46.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Sayre freshman Kayla Kittle was 12th at the District 4 Championships in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.23 seconds, and was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.99 seconds.

Kittle won the 50 free at the Valley Christmas Meet and was second in the 100 free. She was second in the 100 free at the NTL Championships and third in the 50 free.

The remainder of the "All-Valley Super 7" is as follows:

Kennedy Wheeler, freshman, Waverly: Wheeler finished second in 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.9 at the Class B Championships and was third in 50-yard freestyle in 26.04 seconds.

Wheeler was second in the butterfly in a time of 1:01.82 at the Class B prelims. She was also second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.99 seconds.

She finished second at the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.12 and she was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.69 seconds at the IAC Championships.

Kelcey Madigan, junior, Waverly: Madigan finished sixth at the Class B Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke in a personal-best time of 1:16.02 and was 10th in the 500-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 5:47.67. She was also sixth in the breaststroke and 10th in the 500 free at the Class B preliminaries.

Madigan won the 500 free at the IACs in a time of 5:50.44 She was third in the breaststroke in a time of 1:15.2.

Sarah Cuno, senior, Athens: Cuno finished eighth at Districts in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.54 seconds and was 11th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.94 seconds.

Cuno won the 100 free and was second in the 50 free at the Valley Christmas Meet. She was third in the 100 free at the NTL Championships..

Courtney Dukes, senior, Athens: Dukes finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:09.93 in the District 4 Championships and was eighth in 500-yard freestyle in 5:49.11.

Dukes won the 200 free and 500 free at the NTL Championships. She won the 100-yard breaststroke and was second in the 200 free at the Valley Christmas Meet.

Julianne Lee, sophomore, Waverly: Lee finished eighth in 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:07.44 a the Class B Championships and was  15th in 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:02.61. She was eighth in the backstroke and 16th in the 100 free at the Class B prelims.

Lee finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:10.58 at the IAC Championships. She was 12th in the 100 free.

Maggie Cole, junior, Athens: Cole finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:15.57 at the District 4 Championships. She also swam on all three medal-winning relays at the district meet that set new school records.

Cole won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:15.3 at the NTL Championships. She was second in the breastwork and fourth in the backstroke.
