THE VALLEY — Tioga senior Sam Wood capped a brilliant high school career with another trip to the Section IV, Class C title game, and her third selection as Valley Sports Report’s “Softball Player of the Year.”
Waverly junior Shailei Kraft is the “Offensive Player of the Year,” while Athens freshman Emma Adams is the “Newcomer of the Year,” and Sayre senior Paige Wampole is the “Defensive Player of the Year.”
The St. Bonaventure-bound Wood posted a 12-4 record and a 2.20 ERA with 116 strikeouts in the pitcher’s circle. She graduates as the school record-holder with 12 no-hitters and seven perfect games; and is second all-time with 63 wins and 666 strikeouts.
At the plate, Wood hit a school record .565 (39 hits in 69 ABs) with 44 runs scored and a team-high 30 RBI. She graduates with school records in hits (169), RBI (141) doubles (32), runs scored (174), and hits in a season (45).
Kraft led the Lady Wolverines in nearly every offensive category. She hit .567 with 38 hits, including 12 doubles, four triples, and three home runs, in 67 at-bats. She also scored 33 runs, had 29 RBI, and stole nine bases.
With 10 walks, she had a .623 on-base percentage, and also logged a 1,000 slugging percentage, for an astronomical 1.623 OPS.
Adams had an immediate impact in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate for the Lady Wildcats. She hit .494 (39 hits in 79 at-bats) with seven doubles, one home run, 11 RBI, 20 runs and 14 stolen bases.
In the pitcher’s circle, Adams had a 7-5 record with a 2.38 ERA. She allowed 73 hits and walked 27 in 85 1/3 innings, while striking out 59.
The lanky Wampole covered a lot of ground in the outfield for the Lady Redskins. She committed just three errors in 54 defensive chances and had five outfield assists.

Shailei Kraft, junior, Waverly: Aside from an outstanding offensive season (see above), Kraft enjoyed success in the pitcher’s circle. In five appearances, Kraft posted a 3-0 record with a 2.47 ERA. She allowed 11 hits and 21 walks in 17 innings, while striking out 27.
Aubrey Allen, junior, Athens: Allen enjoyed another strong all-around season for the Lady Wildcats.
She hit .412 (28 hits in 68 at-bats), with three doubles, three triples, one home run, 18 RBI, 17 runs scored, and five stolen bases. She walked 11 times for an on-base percentage of .500, which coupled with a slugging percentage of .588, accounted for an OPS of 1.088.
In the pitcher’s circle, Allen was 3-3 with a 2.07 ERA. She yielded 52 hits and walked seven in 54 innings, while striking out 40. Defensively, she committed just two errors in 59 defensive chances for a .966 fielding percentage.
Mariah Culver, sophomore, Tioga: A two-way threat, Culver had a big year for the Lady Tigers. Possessing a lightning-quick bat with tremendous power, Culver hit .532 (33 hits in 62 ABs) with 30 RBI and 28 runs scored.
In the pitcher’s circle, the hard-throwing Culver was 5-1 with a 1.90 ERA and 74 strikeouts, including a school-record 18 in one game.

Kate Cron, junior, Sayre: After a slow start, Cron finished the season strong. She hit .500 (30 hits in 60 ABs) with seven doubles, three triples, one home run, 14 RBI, 13 runs scored and a team-high six stolen bases.
She walked four times and was hit by a pitch for a .538 on-base percentage, which coupled with a .767 slugging percentage accounted for a 1.305 OPS.
Brittany Vergason, senior, Tioga: An outstanding defensive catcher and field general, Vergason hit .500 (32 hits in 64 ABs) this season with 30 runs scored and 20 RBI. She graduates second all-time at Tioga with 136 hits, 164 runs scored and 17 triples and third with 101 RBI.

1B — Sarah Hollenbeck, junior, Tioga: A tremendous defensive first baseman, Hollenbeck hit .431 (31 hits in 72 ABs) with 21 runs scored and 18 RBI.
2B — Kaitlyn Testen, senior, Athens: A good defender, who plays the game at 100 percent at all times, Testen hit .377 (26 hits — all singles — in 69 ABs) with 15 runs scored, eight stolen bases and eight RBI.
SS — Shailei Kraft, junior, Waverly: See above.
3B — Aubrey Allen, junior, Athens: See above.
Extra infielder — Zoey Mennig, sophomore, Waverly: Mennig hit .420 (29 hits in 69 ABs) with eight doubles, four triples, 18 RBI, 23 runs scored, and seven stolen bases. She walked six times for a .461, coupled with a .652 slugging percentage accounted for a 1.113 OPS.
She committed just four errors in 140 total defensive chances behind the plate for a .971 fielding percentage.
OF — Paige Wampole, senior, Sayre: A top-notch defender (see above), Wampole hit .406 (26 hits in 64 ABs) with four doubles, one home run, 15 RBI, 10 runs scored, and five stolen bases.
OF — Sarah Strong, sophomore, Tioga: An athletic defender, Strong hit .333 (20 hits in 60 ABs) with 22 RBI and 13 runs scored.
