VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' GAO HEADLINES SUPER 7 AS "MALE SWIMMER OF YEAR" — WAVERLY'S WHEELER TOP NEWCOMER (2017-03-23)

THE VALLEY — Athens senior Jeff Gao swam in two events at the PIAA meet and set school records in both to earn Valley Sports Report’s 2016-17 “Male Swimmer of the Year” honors.

At the District 4 Championships, Gao broke the 200-yard IM record held by former Athens ace Frank Chen, clocking in at 2:02.2 to finish second. At States, Gao lowered the record to 2:01.6 and finished 17th.

Gao finished 24th in the 100-yard breaststroke at the State meet, clocking in at 1:01.38, eclipsing the mark he set at the D4 meet.

Gao’s other best times of the season were 24.29 seconds in the 50 free, 50.86 in the 100 free, 54.39 in the 100-yard butterfly, 58.04 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, and 1:56.51 in the 200 free, and 5:27.27 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Gao also swam on the “Relay of the Year,” along with juniors Andrew Juhola, Rhonin Bishop, Shawn Shaw, which won the silver medal at the D4 meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:33.76 — more than 10 seconds faster than its seed time.

Waverly 7th-grader Kaden Wheeler made an instant impact and was a consistent point-getter for the Wolverines. He is the “Newcomer of the Year.”

Wheeler finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke at the Class B Championships in a time of 1:05.36.

He finished second in the 100 fly at the IAC Championships, and was fifth in 100-yard backstroke.

Wheeler’s best times of the season include: 1:05.0 in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:05.0 in the 100-yard backstroke, and 5:57.91 in the 500-yard freestyle. The fly and backstroke times are new 7th-grade records at Waverly.

Caleb McClelland, junior, Sayre: McClelland finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle at the PIAA meet in a school-record time of 4:50.96. In his final two swims of the season, he trimmed more than 12 seconds off his 500 free time.

McClelland finished second in the 500 free at the District 4 meet in a time of 4:55.05, and was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:49.33.

Caleb McClelland’s other best times of the season were 23.18 seconds in the 50 free, 50.62 seconds in the 100 free, 59.82 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:02.00 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:14.5 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 2:13.74 in the 200-yard IM.

Mike Atanasoff, freshman, Waverly: Atanasoff was consistently a triple- and quad-winner to lead Waverly to an 11-2 duals season in the IAC.

He placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at the Class B Championships in 23.53 seconds, and was eighths in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.02 seconds.

Atanasoff was a triple-winner at the IAC Championships, winning the 50 free in 22.96 and and 100 free in a tie of 50.44 seconds — both freshman records at Waverly.

Atanasoff’s top times for the season were: 22.96 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, 50.44 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:02.69 in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:05.62 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:12.16 in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:57.32 in the 200-yard freestyle, and 2:15.0 in the 200-yard IM.

Jared Stewart, junior, Waverly: Stewart was another top point-getter for the Wolverines in their stellar duals season.

He finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke at the Class B Championships in a time of 1:03.84, and was seventh in the 200-yard IM in 2:16.56.

Stewart finished third in the backstroke at the IAC Championships in 1:02.7, and was third in the 200 IM in 2:14.11. Both times crack the all-time Top 20 at Waverly.

Stewart’s top times for the season were: 25.1 seconds in the 50 free, 53.63 seconds in the 100 free, 1:02.7 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:06.19 in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:10.77 in the 200 free, 2:14.11 in the 200 IM, and 5:41.48 in the 500 free.

Josh McClelland, sophomore, Sayre:
Josh McClelland won the 200 IM at the NTL meet in a time of 2:21.71, and was third in the 100 fly.

He was ninth in the 100-yard freestyle at the District 4 Championships in a time of 55.57 seconds, and was 13th in the backstroke in 1:08.76.

Josh McClelland’s top times for the season were: 24.24 seconds in the 50 free, 50.62 seconds in the 100 free, 1:04.28 in the 100 fly, 1:08.76 in the 100 backstroke, 1:19.81 in the breaststroke, 2:01.05 in the 200 free, 2:21.27 in the 200 IM, and 5:23.55 in the 500 free.

Shawn Shaw, junior, Athens: Shaw finished fifth at the District 4 Championships in the 100-yard butterfly in a tie of 59.91 seconds. He also finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:23.55 — more than 29 seconds faster than his previous PR.

He also won the 50-yard freestyle at the NTL meet in 24.89 seconds, and was second in the 100 free in 56.06 seconds.

Shaw also swam on the “Relay of the Year.”

Shaw’s best times of the season were: 24.86 seconds in the 50 free, 54.91 seconds in the 100 free, 1:02.42 in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:12.15 in the 100-yard breaststroke, 2:01.51 in the 200 free, 2:24.11 in the 200 IM, and 5:52.43 in the 500 free.

Josh Lee, freshman, Waverly: Lee was fourth at the IACs in the 100-yard freestyle i a time of 55.65 seconds, and was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.25.

He was 10th in the 200 free at the Class B Championships in a time of 2:03.04 and was 11th in the 500 free in a time of 5:37.9.

Lee’s best times of the season were: 25.3 seconds in the 50 free, 54.59 in the 100 free, 2:02.25 in the 200 free, 2:33.89 in the 200 IM, and 5:36.81 in the 500 free.
