ATHENS ó Williams Ford dropped a heart-breaker to RTL-1 to open the week, but bounced back with big wins over Gannon Associates to close out regular-season play in Athens Little League Majors Division baseball action.
Williams Ford will square off with the Firemen Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Majors Division championship game.
RTL-1 7, Williams Ford 5
On Saturday, RTL-1 scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-5 decision over Williams Ford.
RTL-1 took the lead with a run in the top of the first, but Williams Ford answered with two in the home half of the frame.
RTL evened the score in the top of the third inning, but Caleb Nichols delivered a two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2. Nicholsí blast plated Mason Lister and Cameron Sullivan, who had each kept the inning alive with two-out singles.
RTL scored three times in the top of the fourth to knot the score again, then plated two more in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lister stroked a two-out single, and Sullivan belted a double to put runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to Nichols to load the bases, all three runners were stranded there on a fly ball to center field to end the game.
Nichols homered and singled, and scored a run, and Sullivan doubled and singled and scored a run to pace Williams Ford at the plate, while Lister singled twice and scored two runs.
Sander Bertsch singled and scored a run in the win, and Shawn VanDyke added a single.
Williams Ford 28, Gannon Associates 8
On Sunday, Williams Ford erupted for 18 runs in the third inning to break open a 1-0 game en route to a 28-8 win over Gannon Associates.
Caleb Nichols had four hits, including a home run, and scored four runs, and Cameron Sullivan had four hits, including a double, and scored three runs to lead Williams Ford at the plate, while Mason Lister stroked four singles and scored three runs, and Sander Bertsch singled three times and scored four runs.
Kelley Reid singled and scored three runs in the win, while Garrett Thetga and Jace Babcock each singled and scored three runs, and Ethan Sites and Jaden Wright each crossed the plate three times.
Lucas Schmoyer homered and singled, and scored two runs, and Carson Smith homered to lead Gannonís at the plate, while Tyler Roe doubled and scored a run.
Matt Machmer, Carson Rowe, and Aidan Garcia singled and scored a run for Gannonís, and Gage Warner crossed the plate once.
Williams Ford 10, Gannon Associates 0
Williams Ford pounded out 12 hits and had a trio of pitchers combine on a two-hitter in a 10-0 four-inning win over Gannon Associates Tuesday night.
Williams Ford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Sander Bertsch walked to lead off the frame, Mason Lister, Cameron Sullivan, and Caleb Nichols stroked consecutive singles to make it 2-0, then Garrett Thetga capped the rally with a two-run double.
Lister had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored three runs, and Thetga had three hits, including a double, to lead Williams Ford at the plate, while Sullivan singled twice and scored three runs, and Nichols tripled and singled, and scored two runs.
Bertsch tripled and scored two runs in the win, and Shawn VanDyke added a single.
Nichols, Lister, and Sullivan shared the pitching duties. They struck out six, walked two, and allowed two hits.
Carson Rowe and Aidan Garcia each singled to account for Gannonís hits.
