VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S KRAFT HEADLINES SUPER 7, ALL-VALLEY TEAM AS "SOFTBALL PLAYER OF YEAR" — TIOGA'S HOLLENBECK, WAVERLY'S HAMMOND, HALL ALSO HONORED (2017-06-15)

THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Shailei Kraft enjoyed one of the best seasons ever on a Valley softball diamond and has been named the 2017 Valley Sports Report “Softball Player of the Year.”

Kraft, a slick-fielding shortstop with a cannon of an arm, hit an astounding .689 on the season with 42 hits in 61 at-bats, including 19 extra-base hits. She had 13 doubles, and five triples, 34 RBI and 36 runs scored, and struck out just three times in 68 plate appearances.

During her five-year varsity career, Kraft hit .498 with 137 hits in 275 at-bats, including 39 doubles, 12 triples, and five home runs. She also had 105 RBI, and scored 120 runs.

Waverly sophomore Wendi Hammond led the Valley in nearly every pitching category, including nine wins, to earn “Pitcher of the Year” honors.

Hammond posted a 9-6 record with a 2.04 ERA. She allowed just 78 hits in 92 2/3 innings pitched, while striking out 109 and walking just 27. Opposing batters hit just .216 against her.

Tioga senior Sarah Hollenbeck has been a mainstay at first base for the Lady Tiger for four years. Once again this season, the slick fielder saved her team runs scooping throws in the dirt, and stretching into full splits to field throws.

For the third time, Hollenbeck is the VSR “Defensive Player of the Year.”

Waverly freshman Riley Hall made an immediate impact for the Lady Wolverines with a powerful and productive bat to earn 2017 “Newcomer of the Year” honors.

Hall hit .519 with 28 hits in 54 at-bats, including nine doubles and three home runs. She had 25 RBI and scored 12 runs.

Aubrey Allen, senior, Athens: A dangerous hitter from the first day she stepped on the field for the Lady Wildcats, Allen found her groove in the pitcher’s circle late int he season and pitching them into the District 4, Class AAAA semifinals.

Allen posted a 4-2 record in the pitcher’s circle with a 1.16 ERA. She allowed 39 hits in 42 2/3 innings pitched, while striking out 24 and walking just six.

At the plate, Allen hit .463 with 31 hits, including six doubles and six triples, She scored 23 runs and stole five bases.

Wendi Hammond, sophomore, Waverly: Hammond (see pitching numbers above) hit .527 on the season with 29 hits, including five doubles, three triples, and two home runs. She scored 33 runs, had 14 RBI, and 22 stolen bases. She struck out just five times in 68 plate appearances.

Mariah Culver, junior, Tioga: Culver is power personified, whether she’s in the pitcher’s circle or at the plate.

Culver hit .500 on the season with 27 hits,, including six doubles, two triples, and two home runs. She had 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, and four stolen bases.

In the circle, Culver posted a 3.56 ERA with 111 walks and just 29 walks in 63 innings. She allowed 65 hits.

Marissa Howe, junior, Tioga: Perhaps the breakout player of the year, Howe was a force at the plate for the Lady Tigers this season.

Howe hit .439 on the season with 29 hits, including 20 extra-base hits (15 doubles, three triples, and two home runs.) She also had 24 RBI, 19 runs scored, and six stolen bases.

Zoe Mennig, junior, Waverly: A dynamic defensive catcher, Mennig enjoyed a great season at the plate as well this season.

She hit .426 with 26 hits, including six doubles, one triple, and two home runs. She had 27 RBI, scored 16 runs, stole 11 bases, and struck out just three times in 66 plate appearances.

Emma Adams, sophomore, Athens: A versatile player, Adams solidified the Lady Wildcats’ infield defense late in the season with a shift to first base.

A slap hitter, Adams hit .480 on the season with 36 hits, including three doubles and two triples. She scored 24 runs and stole seven bases.

1B: Sarah Hollenbeck, senior, Tioga: A dynamic fielder, Hollenbeck also enjoyed a great year at the plate.

Hollenbeck hit .484 on the season with 31 hits, including five doubles and two home runs. She had 16 RBI, 16 runs scored, and five stolen bases.

2B: Madalyn Dydynski, junior, Tioga: A strong defender and “positive presence” on the field, Dydynski hit .298 with 17 hits, including four doubles, three triples, and one home run. She had 14 runs scored, and 13 RBI.

SS: Shailei Kraft, senior, Waverly: See above.

3B: Aubrey Allen, senior, Athens: See above.

OF: Reagan Lynch, senior, Athens: An outfielder with a great deal of range, Lynch, a slap hittter, hit .371 this season with 26 hits, including two doubles. She scored 17 runs and stole six bases.
 
OF: Domi Woodruff, senior, Sayre: Woodruff played a number of positions for the Lady Redskins this season, but stayed on course offensively throughout.

She led the team with a .339 average with 19 hits, including four doubles and two triples. She had 10 RBI, scored five runs, and struck out just five times in 59 plate appearances.

OF: Sara Strong, junior, Tioga: Strong played several positions during the season for the Lady Tigers, but was a formidable presence at the plate the entire season.

She hit . 444 with 24 hits, including six doubles, four triples, and one home run. She scored 15 runs, drove in 11 runs, and stole five bases.
