ATHENS — Athens scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a close game en route to a 10-4 win over Waverly in pool play action here Monday evening in the Gilbert-Brown 8U baseball tournament, hosted by Athens Little League.
Athens took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Connor Davidson, then stretched its lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a three-run rally that was highlighted by a two-run single by Kamdyn Wheeler.
Waverly took advantage of five consecutive walks, and a two-run single by Collin Wheeler in the top of the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 5-4.
Davidson delivered the big blow for Athens in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run double. Alex Arcesi added an RBI single in the rally.
Davidson doubled and singled, scored one run, and had five RBI to lead Athens at the plate, while Peter Bertsch singled twice and scored one run, Kamdyn Wheeler singled and drove in two runs, Arcesi singled, scored one run, and knocked in a run, and Joseph Dickerson added a single.
Jacob Shores and Duncan Thetga each scored twice win the win, while Eli Hicks, Zac Fisher, and Caleb Lennon each crossed the plate once.
Collin Wheeler singled and drove in two runs for Waverly’s only hit, while Todd LaForrest, and Brandon Bennett each scored a run and had an RBI, and Jack Pipher and Hayden Roskow each scored one run.
Hicks earned the win for Athens, striking out and walking two in two hitless innings of work, while Thetga allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings and fanned eight. Wheeler struck out one and walked one in 1/3 of an inning.
Griffin Walter had Waverly’s best turn on the mound, striking out six and walking three in 2 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on two hits.
Athens improves to 3-0 in pool play, while Waverly falls to 1-2.
