SOUTHPORT, N.Y. — Senior Madisyn Wheeler scored with 30 seconds left in the game to lift Sayre to a come-from-behind, 3-2, win over Whitney Point here Friday evening in the semifinals of the Notre Dame Tournament in non-league girls soccer action.
Whitney Point took a quick 2-0 lead on a penalty kick goal by Linset Howell just 74 seconds into the contest, and a goal by Karlee Howell in the 8th minute.
In the 10th minute, senior Kirsten Covey, off a feed from sophomore Abby Moliski, scored to cut the Sayre deficit in half.
Less than two minutes later, junior Stephanie Klovekorn scored off an assist from junior Jennifer Shaffer to tie the game at 2-2.
From that point on, until Wheeler’s game-winning goal, which was set up by another Moliski assist, it was a defensive struggle.
Sayre had a 12-10 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Blair Wampole recorded eight saves in net for the Lady Redskins.
Sayre will face the host Notre Dame Lady Crusaders in the championship game Saturday at 7 p.m.
