Valley Sports Report
TOWANDA — Sayre scored four goals in the second half to rally for a 4-1 win over winless Towanda here Saturday morning in NTL boys soccer action.

The first half was a scoreless battle that featured numerous quality scoring chances for the Redskins, including a shot that caromed off the crossbar, and “several nice stops” by Towanda keeper Jared McNeal.

Six minutes into the second half, Ryan Risch scored an unassisted goal to give Towanda, now 0-13, a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after the goal, the game was delayed nearly 30 minutes after a “violent collision” between Sayre striker Sam Vandermark and McNeal. Vandemark was taken for stitches to his chin, and McNeal received attention for a cut near his eye.

Sayre coach Randy Rockwell said his team picked up the pace after the stoppage of play.

“It was just good, hard soccer play with two quality kids going to the ball, but Sam's injury seemed to light a fire under (our guys),” he said.

Two minutes after the resumption of play, senior Sam Wheeler tied the game off a through-ball from freshman Cody Vanbenthuysen.

Five minutes later, Vanbenthuysen set up fellow freshman Nic Bentley for the go-ahead goal.

Senior Jordan Rockwell, off an assist from Bentley, scored five minutes later to give the Redskins a 3-1 lead.
