NTL BOYS SOCCER: GALETON TOPS SAYRE, 6-2; DEALS BIG BLOW TO REDSKINS' POSTSEASON HOPES (2017-10-09)
Valley Sports Report GALETON — Galeton took a quick 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win over Sayre here Monday evening in NTL boys soccer action.
The loss could be critical for the Redskins’ postseason hopes. They are currently 7-9 on the season, and need wins in their final two games — at NEB Wednesday, and at home Monday against Athens — to qualify for the upcoming District 4, Class A playoffs.
Isaiah Shoemaker, who had a hat trick and an assist in the win, and Julian Martinez each scored two goals in a 15-minute span early in the contest to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Sayre answered with a pair of quick goals by senior Jordan Rockwell, both off assists from senior Sam Wheeler, to trim the deficit to 4-2.
Shoemaker added another goal late in the first half to stem the Redskin momentum and give the Tigers a 5-2 lead at the halftime intermission.
Joel Griffen scored an insurance goal for the Tigers with six minutes remaining in the contest.
Galeton had a 22-20 edge in shots-on-goal. Both teams had six corner kicks.
Sayre sophomore Camden Wheeler recorded 16 saves in net, while Galeton’s Brandon Reuf had seven saves.
Sayre returns to action Wednesday at NEB at 4 p.m.
