|SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: OWEGO EDGES S-VE IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME; LADY PANTHERS' POSTSEASON HOPES DEALT CRITICAL BLOW (2017-10-10)
Valley Sports Report
SPENCER — Owego scored eight minutes into the second overtime period to post a 2-1 win over S-VE here Monday afternoon in Section IV, Division III field hockey action.
“Unfortunately, we dominated most of the game, but could not find the goal,” said S-VE coach Maggie Childs. “Their goal keeper Morgan Dunbar had five saves and is one of the best goalies I have seen this year.
“We probably had possession 70 percent of the time,” she noted.
Eighth-grader Adrianna Newman scored S-VE’s lone goal in the game, off an assist from classmate Rhianna Lawrence.
The loss deals the Lady Panthers’ postseason hopes a near-fatal blow. A win would have automatically qualified S-VE for the upcoming Class C playoffs, but now it will need an invite from Section IV, which usually happens only when not enough teams qualify to fill the bracket.
“Individually. we have come a very long way, but our youth and inexperience didn't allow for us to play together as a team,” said Childs.
“This will definitely happen in the years to come but for our seniors —Anna Devlen, Faith Kelly, and Keira Benjamin — a shot at postseason is very slim.”
S-VE, now 4-8, closes out the regular season Thursday at Maine-Endwell.
