IAC BOYS SOCCER: SVEC QUALIFIES FOR PLAYOFFS WITH 5-1 WIN OVER WATKINS GLEN (16 PHOTOS) (2017-10-10)

WATKINS GLEN — SVEC scored a quick goal and never looked back, building a 4-0 halftime lead en route to a 5-1 win over Watkins Glen here Monday afternoon in IAC boys soccer action.

With the win, the Eagles finish the regular season at 5-7 and qualify for the upcoming Section IV, Class C playoffs.

Sophomore Alex Doucett, off a feed from classmate Lance Jensen, scored the game’s first goal just 2:15 into the contest to put SVEC up 1-0.

With 24:17 left in the first half, senior Zach Sherwood, off an assist from Doucett, made it 2-0.

Just five minutes later, Jensen found the net off a feed from Doucett to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

With 12:33 left in the first half, senior Bryant Sexton converted a penalty kick to give SVEC a 4-0 lead, which it carried into the halftime intermission.

The Senecas lit up the scoreboard for the only time about four minutes into the second half on a penalty kick by Jakob Johnson.

Sherwood scored his second goal of the game, off Doucett’s third assist of the contest, with 22:13 remaining to provide the final margin.

SVEC had a 32-15 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Jake Wentworth recorded 12 saves for the Eagles.

SVEC now awaits word on its opening-round playoff opponent. Play begins Oct. 18.
