CHENANGO VALLEY — State-ranked Waverly scored a pair first-half goals in a 70-second span en route to a 3-0 win over Chenango Valley here Tuesday afternoon in non-league girls soccer action.
Waverly, now 14-0 and ranked 6th in Class B, returns to action Saturday
in the IAC Large School championship game against the winner of the North divisional playoff game between Dryden and Trumansburg at 6 p.m. at Tompkins-Cortland
“I think we caught CV off guard a bit,” said said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. “They were a very physical team, which is good for us to practice against.
“We had a great start with great speed,” she noted. “Our passing wasn't our best, but we continued to improve.
“We tried some new things, new positions tonight in preparation for postseason play,” added Hogan. “This was a huge win for us.”
Kayla Kromelbein scored with 34:15 remaining in the first half to give the Lady Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Just 70 seconds later, Elle Nittinger, off a feed from Melina Ortiz, scored to make it 2-0.
Nittinger tacked on an insurance goal with 2:25 remaining in the game to provide the final margin.
“Elle had a great game tonight,” said Hogan. “She worked her position very well.
“And, Sarah Uhl had a great game at midfield and at center-forward,” she added.
Waverly had a 15-6 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Hogan was impressed with her team’s defense.
“Our defensive line switched a bit in the second half and they proved to work very well together.
“Gabby Picco tried her hand at center-defense, while Cora (Smith) was moved to back left,” noted Hogan. “The transition was smooth.
“This just goes to show just how much depth this team has and how versatile these girls are,” she added.
Zoe Mennig had five saves in net for the Lady Wolverines, and Laurel Pernesky-Currier had 11 for CV.
