ATHENS — Connor Simpson scored on a header off a corner kick from Daniel Stearns with 25:15 left in the game to lift state-ranked Notre Dame to a 2-1 win here Tuesday afternoon in non-league boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
Notre Dame, ranked second in Class B in New York State, improves to 11-0-1, while Athens falls to 11-1-2.
After a scoreless first half, Stearns put the Crusaders on the board first, off an assist from Kevin Bayne, about 6 1/2 minutes after the intermission.
Senior Ethan Lane, off assists from junior Willey Tilley and sophomore Lucas Arnold, tied the game with 30:51 remaining in the game.
Athens had a 9-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sayre’s Declan Sharma recorded eight saves in net for the Crusaders, while Braden Priester had four saves for the Wildcats.
Athens returns to action Saturday when it hosts Williamson at 3 p.m.
