SAYRE — Sayre Rec. had four wrestlers go unbeaten and win titles, and three others finish in the top three here Sunday at the Conklin Youth Wrestling Tournament.

Brendan Cooke and Jordan Brown each went 5-0, and Jamisen Gardner and Brady Flynn each went 4-0 to claim gold for Sayre.

“They put together the best day I have seen from any of these guys,” said Sayre coach Donnie Barrett.

Treyton Barrett was 4-1 on the day with four pins, and logged Sayre’s lone second-place finish, while Cory Hurd and Jayden Cutt each finished third.

“(Jayden) Cutt only had four practices and recorded two wins in his first tournament ever,” said Barrett. “I am very excited to see what his future brings.”

Jacob Carpenter, Blake Zingeser, and Aiden Varga each recorded fourth-place finishes, while Chase Wheeler, Ian Garrison,  Brayden Northrup, William Vosburgh, Connor Garrison, and Timothy George each registered fifth-place finishes.

“I can’t stress enough on how tough we all wrestled today,” said Barrett. “All these guys got in some tough matches and kept their heads and pulled thorough.

“Last year at this tournament we took some lumps, that’s for sure,” he noted. “Its very impressive to see where we are as a team one year later.

“The progress is undeniable,” added Barrett.

Sayre Rec. returns to action Sunday at Athens in the Little ‘Cats Classic.

“It’s the first tournament where we’ll have some of our beginners wrestling, so we should have 30-plus wrestlers competing which will be the most a Sayre Rec. team has had in several years,” said Barrett.

“It will be a good test to see where we are at as a whole,” he added. “I am very excited to see what Sunday will bring.”
