THE VALLEY — Nearly every team from Waverly, Tioga and S-VE is in action today, with all three boys basketball teams, and SVEC wrestling team at home.
The Tioga bowling teams are also at home, and the Waverly boys swim team opens its 2017-18 campaign.
Notre Dame (1-0) at Waverly (0-2), 5:30 p.m.: The Wolverines are coming off a 52-45 home loss to North power Whitney Point, while the Crusaders topped Lansing 70-46.
Waverly looks to avoid an 0-3 start against a Notre Dame team that may be the favorite to win the South Large School title.
Last year, Notre Dame beat Waverly, 70-65, at home in early December. Waverly won the rematch at home in mid-January, 55-52.
Newfield at S-VE (0-1), 5:30 p.m.: The Panthers are coming off a 57-52 overtime loss to defending Class C state champ, while the defending Class D state runner-up Trojans opened the season with a 58-33 win at Marathon.
Last year, Newfield rolled to a 63-32 win at S-VE in early December, then beat the Panthers 53-42 at home.
Candor at Tioga, 6 p.m.: The Tigers open the 2017-18 campaign at home tonight, while the Indians are coming off a 71-65 loss at Southern Cayuga Friday.
Last year, Tioga won at Candor 56-35 in early December, then won 57-41 at home in mid-January.
Waverly (1-0) at Notre Dame (1-0), 6 p.m. (Varsity only): The Lady Wolverines rolled to a 79-38 win over Whitney Point Friday, while
Last year, Waverly won their first meeting at home 71-38 in early December, then won at Notre Dame 54-37 in mid-January.
S-VE (1-0) at Newfield (1-0), 5:30 p.m.: The Lady Panthers are coming off a 42-29 win over Groton last Tuesday, while the Lady Trojans topped Harpursville, 44-23.
Tioga (1-1) at Candor (1-0), 5:30 p.m.: The Lady Tigers are coming off a 57-34 win over Groton Friday, while the Lady Indians rolled to a 53-16 win over Thomas A. Edison.
Last year, Tioga rolled to a 52-28 home win in early December, but dropped a 44-37 decision at Candor in mid-January.
Waverly at SVEC, 7 p.m. @ S-VE Middle School: The Eagles are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Clyde Cole Invitational, while the Wolverines went to 2-5 in duals at the Mark Stephens Classic.
Last year, SVEC rolled to a 75-12 win at Waverly.
Waverly at Lansing, 4:30 p.m.: The Wolverines, who are coming off a 12-2 duals season and a team title at the IAC Championship meet, open their 2017-18 campaign on the road this afternoon against their biggest league rival.
Last year, Lansing won at Waverly 95-85 in early December. The Bobcats also won at home in mid-January, 102-83.
Waverly (8-0) at Newark Valley (9-3), 3:30 p.m. @ Valley Bowling Center: The Wolverines are coming off a sweep of Candor Thursday, while the Cardinals swept Groton.
Waverly is averaging a league-high 3,163 pins in its first two matches, while Newark Valley is averaging 2,350 pins.
O-M (6-6) at Tioga (8-0), 3:30 p.m. @ Valley Bowling Center: The Tigers are coming off a sweep of Candor Tuesday, while the Indians were swept by Watkins Glen.
Tioga is averaging 2,567 in its first two matches, while O-M is averaging 1,902 pins.
