CANDOR — Candor used a strong second quarter to take a nine-point halftime lead en route to a 49-41 win over Tioga here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School girls basketball action.
The Lady Indians led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, then used a 17-9 run in the second quarter to take a 27-18 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Lady Tigers twice trimmed the lead to three points in the third quarter. On both occasions, Candor missed free throws, only to rebound the miss and convert it into two points.
“We didn’t do a very good job on the boards,” said Tioga coach Joe Robinson. “(Candor) must have out-rebounded us 5-to-1.
“We didn’t do a very good job of getting back on defense either,” added Robinson.
Senior Grace Manwaring led Tioga with 10 points, while freshman Eve Wood had seven points, six rebounds, and two steals, sophomore Giovanna Rossi added five points and six rebounds, and junior Bekah Richter chipped in with four points and five rebounds.
Seniors Hannah Browne and Madi Teribury each scored four points, and senior Emily Polo Rankin had three assists.
Shaylin Heidl led Candor with 20 points.
The Lady Indians won despite making just 8 of 28 free-throw attempts.
Tioga, now 1-2, returns to action Friday at Watkins Glen.
