MANSFIELD — Sayre used a 12-2 third-quarter run to take control in a low-scoring 36-29 win over Mansfield here Wednesday night in NTL Small School Division girls basketball action.

The Lady Redskins led 9-2 after the first quarter, but Mansfield “went small” in the second quarter and rallied to tie the game at 18-18 at the half.

“It was a solid team effort to pull this win out,” said Sayre coach Eileen Sparduti.

“Mansfield can put four fast guards on the floor, and that prompted us into substitutional rotations that we have not often used, and also pushed some players into positions they don’t typically play,” noted Sparduti.

“We were able to making coaching adjustments, and it is a credit to our ladies that they stepped up and responded,” she added.

Junior Stephanie Klovekorn scored seven points in the first quarter, including five points from the free-throw line, to lead Sayre to a 9-2 lead.

The Lady Tigers scored 16 points in the second quarter, but Sayre senior Madisyn Wheeler scored five points, including a 3-pointer, to help send the Lady Redskins into the halftime locker room tied at 18-18.

Junior Camry Lane scored eight points in the third quarter, and senior Blair Wampole added four to account for all of Sayre’s points in a 12-2 run that gave them a 30-20 lead entering the final eight minutes.

Mansfield cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, but sophomore Emily Sutryk canned a 3-pointer, and the Lady Redskins made three of five free throws to preserve the win.

Lane led Sayre with 12 points, five rebounds, and five steals, while Klovekorn scored eight points, grabbed seven boards, and had four steals, Wampole added six points, six blocked shots, and four rebounds, Wheeler chipped in with five points, and senior Emily Moore had three rebounds and three steals.

Sayre, now 9-3, returns to action Friday at North Penn-Liberty.
