THE VALLEY — Basketball takes center stage once again Friday, with the Waverly boys hosting state-ranked Newfield in the marquee match-up of the night.
The Athens, Tioga, and S-VE girls are also home tonight, and the Athens swimmers host a meet this afternoon.
Newfield (10-0) at Waverly (8-3), 5:30 p.m. JV start: The Wolverines are coming off a 61-50 win at S-VE Tuesday, while the Trojans are coming off a 76-67 win over Thomas A. Edison.
Newfield is ranked second in the state in Class D, while Waverly is honorable mention in Class B.
Last year, Waverly won at Newfield, 57-47.
S-VE (3-6) at Newark Valley, 6 p.m. JV start: The Panthers are coming off a 61-50 loss at home to Waverly, while the Cardinals dropped a 60-48 decision at Candor.
Last year, Newark Valley topped S-VE, 46-38.
Tioga (8-3) at Edison, 6 p.m. JV start: The Tigers are coming off a 68-46 win over Notre Dame, while the Spartans dropped a 76-67 decision to state-ranked Newfield.
Last year, Tioga edged Edison, 64-59.
Waverly (10-0) at Newfield (4-7), 6 p.m. JV start: The state-ranked Lady Wolverines, ranked 13th in Class B, are coming off an 83-31 win over S-VE Tuesday, while the Lady Trojans topped Edison.
Last year, Waverly rolled over Newfield, 71-27.
Sayre (9-3) at North Penn-Liberty (2-8) , 6 p.m. JV start: The Lady Redskins are coming off a 36-29 win over North Penn-Mansfield, while the Lady Mountaineers dropped a 51-34 decision to Cowanesque Valley.
Troy (0-8) at Athens (7-4), 6 p.m. JV start: The Lady Wildcats are going off a 61-29 loss to unbeaten Wellsboro, while the winless Lady Trojans dropped a 56-21 decision to Wyalusing.
Newark Valley (4-6) at S-VE (6-4), 6 p.m. JV start: The Lady Panthers were thumped 83-31 by Waverly, while the Lady Cardinals edged Candor, 48-44.
Edison (1-8) at Tioga (2-9), 6 p.m. JV start: The Lady Tigers are coming off a 69-40 loss to Notre Dame Tuesday, while the Lady Spartans lost to Newfield.
Last year, Tioga thumped Edison, 60-22.
Waverly, Sayre, SVEC at Mike Watson Invitational, 4 p.m. @ Watkins Glen H.S.: The Watson tournament has shrunk to 10 to 12 teams this season, including Elmira and a number of IAC schools.
Tioga at Robert Bradshaw Tournament, 5 p.m. @ Canandaigua H.S.: Tioga will get its first taste of tournament action in 2018 when the Tigers travel to Canandaigua Academy in Section V for the 43rd annual Robert Bradshaw Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The Tigers will not be the lone Section IV team competing. Chenango Forks, Horseheads, Ithaca, Lansing and Owego are expected to attend.
Representing Section V are the host Braves, East Rochester, Geneva, Hilton, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Irondequoit, Marcus Whitman, McQuaid, Palmyra-Macedon, Penn Yan, Victor, Webster Thomas and Williamson/Sodus.
Competition in the two-day, double-elimination tournament begins Friday at 5 p.m. Saturday’s action starts with wrestlebacks at 10:30 a.m., semifinals at noon and the finals at 4:30 p.m.
BOYS & GIRLS SWIMMING
Bloomsburg at Athens, 4:30 p.m.: The Wildcat boys and girls teams are coming off lopsided losses to powerhouse Lewisburg teams.
