IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: BLAASCH LEADS S-VE IN 40-32 WIN OVER NEWARK VALLEY (16 PHOTOS) (2018-01-12)

SPENCER — Senior Ari Blaasch scored 14 of her career-high 18 points in the second half to lead S-VE to a 40-32 win over Newark Valley here Friday night in IAC girls basketball action.

S-VE coach Abby Gentile credited Blaasch, and classmate Mackenzie Grube for helping the Lady Panthers through a rough shooting night.

“Our shots would not fall tonight, and the team began to put pressure on themselves, but our senior leadership prevailed,” she said.

“Mackenzie Grube played so tough on the defensive end, and Ari Blaasch got out and ran to get us going in the third quarter,” added Gentile.

Jamie Sayre scored four points in the first quarter to help S-VE to a 10-4 lead.

The Lady Panthers, who had its lead trimmed to 15-10 at the half,  saw its advantage cut to two points, at 25-23, entering the final eight minutes. Mackenna Nechwedowich scored six points in the third quarter, and Tressa Nechwedowich added four for the Lady Cardinals to offset eight points by Blaasch.

Blaasch scored six more points in the fourth quarter, and S-VE made enough free throws — 5 of 10 attempts — to nail down the victory.

Mackenzie Grube had nine points, 10 rebounds, and four steals for S-VE, while Paige Grube had four points and three rebounds, Sayre chipped in with four points, and Blaasch also had four steals and three rebounds.

Mackenna Nechwedowich led NV with 11 points, and Brianna Beebe added eight.

S-VE, now 7-4, hosts Newfield Tuesday.
