TROY — First-year Athens coach Bob Woodward spent the last 13 years as the head coach at Troy, and his former charges dealt him a loss on his home floor earlier this season.
On Monday, the Wildcats returned the favor with a 79-68 win here at the Commons Building in a game that featured the 1,000th career points for Wildcat senior Ethan Lane.
Senior Gavin Stein scored 10 points in the first quarter, and Ethan Lane added points, including a 3-pointer to help Athens to an 18-13 lead.
Ethan Lane scored seven points in the second quarter, including his second 3-pointer of the contest, and Stein, and senior Mateo Baglini added four points apiece to fuel a 20-12 run that gave the Wildcats a 38-25 lead at the half.
Clark Jackson scored 10 points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Ja Wallace added nine points to keep the Trojans in the game.
The pace picked up in the second half.
Stein scored nine more points in the third quarter, and junior Aric Westbrook drained a 3-pointer as Athens increased its lead to 15 points, at 57-42, heading into the final eight minutes. Lane reached his milestone with a free throw with 3 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Stein knocked down a pair of early buckets in the fourth quarter, and Westbrook added another, then it was a steady procession to the free-throw line for Athens.
The Wildcats made 16 of 18 from the charity stripe to nail down the win. Ethan Lane made 7 of 8, while Aaron Lane was 4-for-4, Westbrook was 3-for-4, and Stein made both of his attempts.
The Trojans cut into the Athens lead into the final eight minutes, but failed to do more damage by making just 4 of 12 free-throw attempts.
