ODESSA — Waverly used a strong second half to pull away for a 51-30 win over O-M here Thursday night in IAC junior varsity boys basketball action.
The win, coupled with back-to-back losses this week by Watkins Glen, puts Waverly back in first place, and in control of their own destiny.
A win over Candor Friday night would give the junior Wolverines their sixth consecutive Large School title. A loss Friday would force a playoff game at Watkins Glen Monday.
Waverly trailed 7-6 after the first eight minutes, but Peyton Bowen scored four points in the second quarter, and Ryan Lambert knocked down a 3-pointer in a 12-6 spurt that gave the Wolverines an 18-13 lead at the half.
Jalen McCarty drained a 3-pointer, and scored five points in the third quarter, and Thomas Price, and Caden Hollywood also added 3-pointers in a 16-8 run that pushed Waverly’s lead to 34-21 entering the final eight minutes.
Waverly put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 17-9 run, fueled by 12 points from Bowen.
Bowen led Waverly with 18 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Hollywood scored nine points, hauled down 10 boards, and dished out four assists, and McCarty had seven points and three rebounds.
Lambert added five points in the win, and Dylan Streeter chipped in with four points, and four rebounds.
