SPENCER — S-VE used a 12-1 run that bridged the first and second quarters to take the lead, and never trailed again in a 54-42 non-league win over Chenango Valley here Monday night in non-league girls basketball action.
“The girls played really well tonight,” said S-VE coach Abby Gentile. “They got out and ran, which allowed for many opportunities around the rim.
“We were able to finish those tonight and it made a big difference in the game,” she added.
S-VE jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter, but CV’s canned a trio of 3-pointers in a 3 1/2-minute span to rally the Lady Warriors to a 12-11 lead.
Sophomore Paige Grube’s old-fashioned three-point play with 1:45 remaining in the first quarter gave the Lady Panthers a 14-12 lead, and triggered the decisive run.
After a free throw by Paige Grube with 20 seconds left, senior Daysha Rorick, who had nine points in the first quarter, scored at the buzzer to give S-VE a 17-12 lead.
Calista Smith made one of two free throws for CV in the opening moments of the second quarter, but Paige Grube, senior Ari Blaasch, and senior Mackenzie Grube answered with consecutive buckets for S-VE to extend the lead to 23-13.
CV trimmed the deficit to 29-27 with 1:11 left in the first half, thanks to nine points in the stanza by Bella LoVuolo, but Mackenzie Grube, and sophomore Tara Perkins scored in the final 30 seconds to tie the Lady Panthers a 33-27 lead at the half.
Senior Jamie Sayre scored a pair of buckets early in the fourth quarter, sandwiched around Worden’s fourth 3-pointer of the game for CV, to give S-VE a 37-30 lead with 6:32 left in the third quarter.
Jenna Hanyon’s convention three-point play for CV with 6:19 left in the third quarter closed the gap to 37-33, but the Lady Warriors didn’t score again for nearly six minutes.
In the mean time, Mackenzie Grube sparked a 7-0 spurt with a bucket, and Blaasch added back-t-back scores. Mackenzie Grube capped the run with a free throw to make it 44-33 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.
CV made three free throws in the final 35 seconds of the stanza to trim the deficit to 44-36, but Perkins, Rorick, and Mackenzie Grube opened the fourth quarter with buckets to give S-VE a commanding 50-36 lead with 5:18 left in the game.
Mackenzie Grube led S-VE with 15 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, and four assists, while Rorick had 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists, and Blaasch added 10 points, and three assists
Paige Grube scored 10 points in the win, while Perkins had four points and nine rebounds, and Sayre chipped in with four points.
LoVuolo led CV with 14 points, and Worden added 12 points.
S-VE, now 12-7, awaits word on its opening-round opponent in the upcoming Class C championships.
