CLEVELAND — Athens grad Kaidon Winters capped a record-setting freshman season on the RIT wrestling team with a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships.
Winters went 1-2 in his first appearance on a national stage, but made his win a memorable one.
In his opening match of the tournament, Winters trailed seventh-seeded Kyle Hatch of Wabash College 8-1 in the first minute, and 14-3 late in the match.
With 1:09 remaining in the third period, Winters tied up Hatch’s legs, and turned a power-half to record his team-record tying 42nd win of the season. It also marked his 22nd pin, which extends his own school record.
In the quarterfinals, Winters dropped a hard-fought, 2-0, decision to second-seed Logan Thomsen of Wartburg College.
In the “blood round” of the consolation bracket, Winters dropped a 6-5 decision to Kevin Edwards of Messiah College.
Winters finished the season with a 42-11 record, matching Luke Baum’s record win total set in 2008-09. He also became the first RIT freshman at the NCAA Championship since 2006-07.
