NEW YORK, N.Y. Athens senior Breana Gambrell finished fourth in the long jump here Saturday at the New Balance National Indoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-American status.
It was a grueling competition with the best of the best in the country competing, said Athens coach Ben Gambrell. Breana represented The Valley well.
Gambrell, who twice hit 19-feet, 5 3/4-inches in her first five jumps, saved her best for last, reaching a mark of 19-feet, 11-inches on her sixth and final jump.
Tatiana Aholou of Laval, Quebec won the gold medal with a leap of 20-feet, 8-inches, edging out Lanae-Tava Thomas of Henrietta, N.Y., who won the silver with an effort of 20-feet, 7 1/4-inch.
Aholou hit her winning mark on her first jump of the day, and it stood against 27 competitors. She hit the same mark on her fifth jump.
Jasmine Moore of Grand Prairie, Tex. was third at 20-feet, 5 1/4-inches.
