VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: SAYRE'S McCLELLAND BOYS "SWIMMER OF THE YEAR" — WAVERLY'S STREETER, ATHENS' HENDERSON ALSO EARN TOP HONORS (2018-03-19)

THE VALLEY — Sayre senior Caleb McClelland won a pair of District 4 gold medals, and narrowly missed out on medals in both events at the PIAA Championships to earn the title of 2017-18 Valley Sports Report boys “Swimmer of the Year.”

McClelland won District 4 gold in the 200-yard freestyle in a new Williamsport High School pool record and school-record time of 1:44.31, and the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:50.39.

At States, McClelland finished ninth in 500 free in a school-record time of 4:46.25, and was 10th in the 200 free in 1:44.36.

McClelland, a three-time “Super 7” selection and former “Newcomer of the Year,” won NTL gold in the 200 free in time of 1:48.16, and the 500 free in 5:01.49. He also won the 200 free in the loaded field at the Waverly Invitational in a time of 1:47.87, and was second in 500 free in time of 4:56.53.

Waverly sophomore Gage Streeter is the “Diver of the Year.” He won IAC gold in the 1-meter diving competition with 372.8 points. He was fourth at the Section IV Championships with 383.55 points.

Athens freshman Mason Henderson is the 2017-18 “Newcomer of the Year.”  He won the NTL gold on the Wildcat 400 free relay, and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:18.08.

Four members of the “Super 7” teamed to win “Relay of the Year." Waverly senior Jared Stewart, sophomores Mike Atanasoff and Josh Lee, and 8th-grader Kaden Wheeler teamed to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:29.04. They were third at the Section IV Championships in a time of 3:32.88.

Six of the seven members on this year’s “Super 7” were on last year’s list.

Mike Atanasoff, sophomore, Waverly:
A three-time “Super 7” selection and former “Newcomer of the Year,” Atanasoff won Section IV gold in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:04.09, and Section IV silver in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.85 seconds.

At the IAC Championships, Atanasoff won the 50-yard freestyle in a time 22.16 seconds, and the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.65 seconds. Both winning times qualified him for the New York State Championships.

Atanasoff also won the 100 free in the loaded field at the Waverly Invitational in 50.18 seconds, and was second in the 50 free in 22.58 seconds.

At States, he finished 44th in the 100 free in a time of 49.24 seconds, and was 49th in the 50 free in a time of 22.36 seconds.

Josh McClelland, junior, Sayre: Josh McClelland won District 4 gold in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.87 seconds. He finished fourth in the 100 free in a time of 50.53 seconds.

Josh McClelland, a two-time “Super 7” selection, finished 31st at States in the 50 free in a time of 23.21 seconds.

The younger McClelland finished second to his brother in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:55.23, and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:01.47.

Josh McClelland finished third in the 50 free in 22.87 seconds at the loaded Waverly Invitational.

Jared Stewart, senior, Waverly: A two-time “Super 7” selection, Stewart earned a pair of Section IV medals, placing third in the third in 200-yard freestyle free in 1:53.3, and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.4.

At the IAC Championships, Stewart placed second in the backstroke in a time of 1:01.63, and was third in the 200 IM in 2:12.01.

Josh Lee, sophomore, Waverly: A two-time “Super 7” selection, Lee won two individual medals at the IAC Championships. He finished second in the 200 free in a time of 1:59.35, and third in the 100 free in 53.63 seconds.

At the Section IV Championships, Lee finished eighth in the 100 free in a time of 57.37 seconds, and was ninth in the 200 free in 2:05.6.

Kaden Wheeler, 8th-grader, Waverly: Last year’s “Newcomer of the Year,” Wheeler won a pair of silver medals at the IAC Championships. He was second in the 100 fly in 59.94 seconds, and second in 100 backstroke in 1:01.63.

At the Section IV Championships, Wheeler finished fourth in the 100 fly in 58.99 seconds, sixth in 100 backstroke in 1:02.31.

Shawn Shaw, senior, Athens: A two-time “Super 7” selection, Shaw narrowly missed out on District 4 medals, finishing seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.57 seconds, and seventh in the 500 free in 5:23.25. He also swam on a medal-winning, third-place 400 free relay.

At the NTL Championships, Shaw finished third in the 100 fly in a time of 1:02.12. He also won gold on the Wildcat 400 free relay.
