Valley Sports Report for Penn York Valley

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Elle Nittinger capped an incredible high school career with career-high averages of 22.1 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals per game, and is the Valley Sports Report 2017-18 girls “Athlete of the Winter.”

Nittinger, who also averaged 3 assists per game, finished her career second on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,552 points. She also amassed 554 rebounds, 323 steals, 303 free throws, 181 assists, and 126 3-pointers.

During her four years on varsity, the Lady Wolverines racked up 72 wins against just 15 losses. They lost in the Section IV, Class B semifinals all four years, but twice it was to the eventual state champion (Sus. Valley in 2015, and Seton Catholic in '17).

The remainder of the “Super 7” is as follows:
Emily Lunger, senior, Athens: A versatile player, Lunger was the VSR “Defensive Player of the Year,” and the NTL “Offensive Player of the Year.”

Lunger is a scorer in the purest sense of the word, but did everything else for the Lady Wildcats as well. She averaged 17.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.9 steals, and 2.7 assists per game.

Breana Gambrell, senior, Athens: A fixture on the basketball court for three years for the Lady Wildcats, Gambrell, who will be attending Penn State on a track scholarship in the fall, maintained her focus on track & field this winter with the newly-formed indoor track team.

Gambrell, a three-time PIAA outdoor gold medalist in the long jump, added an indoor gold in the long jump to her collection, as well as a fourth-place medal in the triple jump, and a seventh-place medal in the 60-meter dash. She now has nine state track & field medals, including four gold, and two silver.

Cassy Bowman, senior, Waverly: Waverly senior Cassy Bowman led the IAC girls in scoring average, and earned her first trip to States. She was the VSR “Bowler of the Year.”

Bowman led the IAC girls for the second consecutive season with a 198.35 average — more than 14.5 pins better than the second-highest average. She threw a league-high series of 719 and a high game of 278.

Bowman won the Section IV, Class B gold medal, and finished fourth at the Section IV State Qualifier. She finished 49th at the New York State Championships.

Mackenzie Grube, sophomore, S-VE: A tremendous player on both ends of the floor, Grube was especially good on the boards, and as an on-ball defender.

She averaged 10.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.4 steals, and 3.1 assists per game.

Melina Ortiz, sophomore, Waverly: Ortiz finished second in the 300-meter dash in a time of 43.41 seconds at the Section IV State Qualifier to advance to the New York State Championships.

A week earlier, Ortiz finished third in the 300-meter dash in 44.32 seconds at the Section IV, Division 1 Championships. She was eighth in the long jump.

At States, Ortiz finished 32nd in the 300-meter dash in 44.37 seconds.

Abby Thoman, senior, Athens: Thoman won District 4 gold in the 1-meter diving competition, and repeated as VSR “Diver of the Year.” Thoman, who also won gold at the NTL Championships, finished 20th at the PIAA Championships.
