Valley Sports Report
ROCHESTER — Athens grad Kaidon Winters, a freshman on the RIT wrestling team, was named the 2017-18 Empire College Wrestling Conference (ECW) “Rookie of the Year” on Wednesday.

Winters, the first top conference newcomer in 11 years for RIT, had a historic season for the Tigers. The 157-pounder became the first freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2007.

Winters tied the school record for wins in a 42-10 season, which includes a 16-1 mark in dual matches. And, he broke three-time NCAA Champion Matt Hamill’s single-season school record with 22 wins by fall.

Winters narrowly missed earning All-American status at the NCAA Championships. He finished second at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
