THE VALLEY —  The Athens Lady Wildcats, competing at the District 4 meet, are looking to lock up more invites to next weekend’s PIAA Track & Field Championships today at Williamsport High School, while a pair of Tioga underclassmen will try to fend off the rain and earn a berth in the upcoming New York State golf championships.

TRACK & FIELD
District 4 Championships, 11:30 field, noon track @ Williamsport H.S.:
The defending champion Class AA Athens Lady Wildcats look to defend their crown, and led after Day 1.

Athens could get off to a quick start with senior Breana Gambrell and junior Ariana Gambrell favored to win gold in the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles, respectively.

The Lady Wildcats are also the top seeds in the 200-meter dash (senior Emily Lunger), 300-meter hurdles (junior Rachel Hutchison), triple jump (Breana Gambrell), and the 400-meter relay (Ariana Gambrell, Hutchison, Lunger, and Breana Gambrell.

Competing in the Class AAA championships, the Athens boys’ best chances for a medal Saturday come from senior Nate Aquilio in the 3,200-meter run, and freshman Ben Gambrell IV in the long jump.

Sayre also has a small contingent on hand, led by junior Joey Stermer, and freshman Zach Belles.

BOYS GOLF
Section IV Individual Medalists Tournament, 9:30 a.m. @ Robert Trent Jone Golf Course @ Cornell Univ.:
Tioga sophomore Sam Taylor, already a two-time state qualifier, and junior A.J. Middendorf are in action in Day 2 of the tournament after making the cut Thursday.

Taylor is tied for seventh entering Saturday’s action after shooting a 79, while Middendorf is tied for 19th after a round of 88.

The top nine advance to the New York State Championships.
