ENDICOTT — Waverly sophomore Cora Smith, and Tioga senior Martha Schumacher posted the best finishes for Valley girls at the Section IV State Qualifier Wednesday afternoon, and also set school record in their respective events.
Smith finished third overall and second in Division II in the 3,000-meter run in a school-record time of 10:42.75, eclipsing the record of 10:45.2 set in 1998 by Kati Hughes.
Schumacher finished third overall and second in Division II in the 400-meter dash in a school-record time of 1:00.78, breaking the previous record of 1:01.6 set by Charlsie Bowen in 2014. Schumacher also finished 11th in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.43 seconds.
Waverly sophomore Paige Ackley finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 1:11.87, and Tioga 8th-grader Julia Walsh was 18th.
Waverly junior Kennedy Wheeler finished seventh in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 34-feet, 4 1/4-inches, and Tioga senior Joanna Wood was 10th at 30-feet, 9-inches.
Waverly sophomore Sheridan Talada was 15th in the 3,000-meter run.
Tioga sophomore Mackenzie Macumber finished 17th in the 100-meter hurdles, while S-VE sophomore Jay Noviello was 18th, Tioga 8th-grader Mariah Nichols was 21st, and Tioga senior Emily Polo Rankin was 22nd.
Tioga 8th-grader Emme Hall finished 18th in the 100-meter dash, and Tioga senior Audra Jaye was 22nd.
Day 2 of the Section IV State Qualifier is this afternoon at Union-Endicott High School.
