VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S CHANDLER BOYS TRACK & FIELD 'ATHLETE OF THE YEAR;' ATHENS, WAVERLY DOMINATE SUPER 7 (2018-06-18)

THE VALLEY — Waverly sophomore Isaac Chandler became the next in a long line of Waverly pole vaulters to earn a trip to States, but the first to do it before his junior season, and has been named the 2018 Valley Sports Report boys “Track & Field Athlete of the Year

Chandler finished second at the Section IV State Qualifier with a vault of 14-feet, 6-inches, which topped the state standard, to earn his first trip to outdoor States.

Chandler, who also finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles at the Section IV State Qualifier, finished ninth at the New York State Championships at 13-feet, 6-inches.

Chandler won the 100-meter hurdles, and was second in the pol vault at the Section IV, Class B Championships. At the IAC Championships, he won the 110 hurdles, and was second in the pole vault.

The Wolverines have had four state champion pole vaulters, and five state runners-up, but none before Chandler had advanced to States as a sophomore.

Relay of the Year: The Athens foursome of seniors Ethan Lane, Nate Aquilio, and Arvid Johnson, and sophomore Doug Vosburg teamed to finish fourth in the 3,200-meter relay at the District 4 Championships in a time of 8:35.48.

Freshman Ben Gambrell IV battled a hip flexor injury for the majority of the 2018 season, but still managed to win the gold medal in the long jump with a career-best leap of 20-feet, 1 1/4-inches to earn the 2018 “Newcomer of the Year.”

He also qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash, but did not run in the finals.

Gambrell IV ran on the Athens 400-meter really team that finished in sixth-place at the District 4, Class AAA Championships. He finished ninth in the long jump.

The remainder of the All-Valley Super 7 are:

Ethan Lane, senior, Athens: Lane earned four medals at the District 4, Class AAA Championships. He finished fifth in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, and ran on the fourth-place 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams.

At the NTL Championships, Lane finished fourth in the 800 and eighth in the 1,600. He also ran on the third-place 3,200-meter, and the fourth-place 1,600-meter relays.

Jon Dailey, senior, Athens: Dailey finished second in the high jump at the District 4, Class AAA Championships for the second consecutive year. He also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, and was on the sixth-place 400-meter relay team.

At the NTL Championships, Dailey finished second in the high jump, and seventh in the 200-meter dash.

Matt VanHouten, senior, Waverly: VanHouten qualified for the Section IV, Division 2 State Qualifier in four events. He finished eighth in the triple jump, eighth in the high jump, and eighth in long jump, and ran on the fourth place 400-meter relay team.

VanHouten won gold in the high jump at the Section IV, Class B Championships, finished second in the long jump, fourth in the triple jump. and was also on fourth-place 400-meter relay team.

At the IAC Championships, VanHouten finished fourth in the long jump, fourth in the high jump, and seventh in triple jump. He also ran on the winning 400-meter relay team.

Damian Hudson, sophomore, Athens:
Hudson, who also qualified for the 100-meter dash but was disqualified for a false start in the preliminaries, finished third in the 200-meter dash at the District 4, Class AAA Championships. He also ran on the fourth-place on 1,600-meter relay team, and on the sixth-place 400-meter relay.

At the NTL Championships, Hudson won the 100-meter dash, finished third in 200-meter dash, and was eighth in the 400-meter dash. He also ran on the fourth-place 1,600-meter relay team.

Arvid Johnson, senior, Athens: Johnson earned three medals at the District 4, Class AAA Championships. He place fifth in the 400-meter dash, and ran on the fourth-place 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams.

 At the NTL Championships, Johnson finished fourth in the 400, and also ran on the third-place 3,200-meter relay, and the fourth-place 1,600-meter relay.

Nate Aquilio, senior, Athens:
Aquilio earned a pair of medals in the District 4 Championships. He finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run, and was on the fourth-place 3,200-meter relay team. He also finished seventh in the 1,600-meter run.

 At the NTL Championships, Aquino was third in 3,200-meter run, and was on the third-place 3,200-meter relay. He was also seventh in the 1,600-meter run.

Honorable Mention: Athens senior Sean Waltman, Tioga sophomore Ezra Steele, S-VE freshman Calum Avery, and Waverly junior Dylan Ward.
