ATHENS — After a slow start, Athens erupted for 15 runs in two innings en route to a 15-1 four-inning win over Sayre here Tuesday evening in pool play action in the District 15 Minors Division Little League baseball playoffs.
Brady Flynn’s two-out infield single in the bottom of the first inning to plate Mason Apgar gave Sayre a 1-0 lead.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, answered with five runs in the top of the second inning, but all five came with two outs following a dropped infield pop-up that would have ended the inning.
Matthias Welles, Eli Hicks, and Duncan Thetga combined on a two-hitter for Athens. Wells allowed an unearned run on two hits, while striking out three and walking one in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Hicks struck out two and walked one in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Thetga fanned two in a perfect inning of relief.
Elijah Hobday had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had six RBI to pace Athens’ 13-hit attack, while Karson Sipley tripled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Thetga singled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI.
Graham Wanck singled, scored three runs, and knocked in a run in the win, while Cooper Robinson singled and scored two runs, Hicks singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, Welles tripled and scored one run, and Kamdyn Wheeler and Austyn Stedge each singled and scored one run.
Flynn singled and scored one run, and Brendon Cook singled to account for Sayre’s offense.
Apgar had the best turn on the mound for Sayre, striking out one and walking one in a scoreless inning of relief.
Athens finishes pool play at 3-0, while Sayre falls to 2-1.
