CORNING — Waverly scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and held on for a 7-5 win over Corning-Painted Post here Tuesday evening in pool play action in the District 15 Majors Division Little League playoffs.
Sean Bubniak cracked a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to give Waverly a 2-0 lead, then Jay Pipher ripped an RBI triple, and scored on a two-out RBI double by Joey Tomasso to make it 4-0.
Waverly tacked on a run in the third inning on a double by Bubniak and a single by Charlie Larrabee to extend the lead to 5-0.
Corning-PP scored twice in the home half of the fourth inning to close the gap to 5-2, but Waverly tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth on singles by Ryan Bowstwick, Carter George, Nehemiah Anthony, and Brayden Talada.
C-PP scored three runs in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 7-5, but only managed a two-out single in the sixth inning.
Bubniak homered and doubled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, while George singled twice and scored two runs, Tomasso doubled and singled, and Talada stroked a pair of singles to pace Waverly’s 13-hit attack.
Pipher tripled and scored a run in the win, while Bostwick singled and scored a run, and Jake VanHouten, Anthony, and Larrabee each added a single. Nathan DeLill also scored a run.
Tomasso and Talada shared the pitching duties and fanned 10 in earning the win for Waverly.
Waverly, now 2-1 in pool play, returns to action Thursday when it hosts Hornell.
