SCHOLASTIC TRACK & FIELD: ATHENS' GAMBRELL WINS LONG JUMP GOLD AT USATF YOUTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (2018-06-28)

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Athens freshman Ben Gambrell IV won the long jump gold in his final attempt here Thursday afternoon in the 16U Division at  the USATF Youth National Championships at SUNY Brockport.

Braden Kalvelage of Hastings, Neb. took the early lead with a leap of 20-feet, 5 3/4-inches on his first jump, and maintained the lead through the first five rounds of jumps.

Gambrell IV, who also won a gold medal in the long jump at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals two weeks ago, was in sixth place through four rounds, but moved into third with his fifth attempt, which measured in at 20-feet 2 1/2-inches.

Gambrell IV was in fourth entering his final jump, then posted a personal-best effort of 20-feet, 7 1/4-inches for the win.

Kalvelage finished second at 20-feet, 5 3/4-inches, while Nino'Antonio Rivera of Orchard Park, N.UY. was third at 20-feet, 4 1/2-inches, which he posted in his final jump, and Ryne Norby of Fort Wayne, Ind. was fourth at 20-feet, 3-inches, and Jaden Price-Whitehead of Upper Dublin Pa. was fifth 20-feet, 3-inches.
