BROCKPORT, N.Y. — In his first triple jump action in more than two months, Athens freshman Ben Gambrell IV finished fourth in the 16U Division at  the USATF Youth National Championships at SUNY Brockport.

“Benny is exceptionally proud of this because he hasn’t jump triple jump since Lock Haven Invite back in April,” said coach (and father) Ben Gambrell, noting the younger Gambrell had been competing strictly in the long jump due to a hip flexor injury.

Gambrell popped off his best jump of the day — 38-feet, 11 1/2-inches — on his first jump and was in second place after round one.

After a foul on his second attempt, Gambrell hit 38-feet, 6 1/4-inches on his third try, but did not top 38 feet in any of his final three attempts.

Isaiah Cash of Leander, Texas fouled on his first two attempts, then took the lead with his third attempt, which measured in at 42-feet, 5 1/2-inches. His gold-medal jump came in his final attempt wot an effort of 44-feet, 8 1/4-inches.

Qadiir Wajd of Hillsborough, Fla., who led after the first two rounds at 40-feet, 9-inches, finished second after popping off a jump of 43-feet, 2 1/4-inches on his final effort.

Jaden Price-Whitehead of Upper Dublin Pa. finished third at 41-feet, 1/2-inch.
