WAVERLY — Horseheads scored three runs in the top of the first and held off a pair of Waverly rallies in a 6-5 win over Waverly here Saturday morning in pool play action in the District 6 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.
Waverly answered in the home half of the first with consecutive singles by Bryce LaForest, Nathan Kellogg, and Ben Shaw on the first three pitches to trim the gap to 3-1. Kellogg scored later in the inning on a groundout off the bat of Jerry Carnrike.
Horseheads scored two more runs in the third inning, and tacked on a key insurance run in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 6-2.
Waverly scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 6-5, and had the tying run on second base with one out.
LaForest had three hits, including a double, and two runs scored, and Kellogg stroked three singles and scored two runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while Shaw singled and scored a run, and Carnrike, Jeremy Yeakel, and Logan Roskow each added a single.
Hugo started for Waverly and struck out four in 4 1/3 innings. LaForest closed the game and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.
Waverly closes out pool play at 1-3.
