SCHOLASTIC WRESTLING: GRAPPLERS FROM WAVERLY, SVEC, ATHENS COMPETE IN 'SCUFFLE IN THE STADIUM' (24 PHOTOS) (2018-07-01)

WAVERLY — Local wrestlers from Waverly, SVEC, and Athens endured the scorching mid-90 degree temperatures here Saturday to wrestle in the second edition of the Scuffle in the Stadium at Memorial Stadium.

With six teams in attendance, the tournament was wrestled on two mats, instead of the originally-planned three mats to avoid the black mat from S-VE. The heat also caused delays to replace tape that held the other two mats together.

Originally scheduled to be a round-robin tournament, the Scuffle was stopped in Round 4 near dusk due to moisture on the mats create unsafe conditions for the wrestlers.

The Elmira-based Arm Spin Army, which included Tioga’s David MacWhinnie and the Section IV all-stars were both 3-0 on the day.

South Seneca posted a 2-2 record, while a combined Waverly / SVEC squad and an NTL team, including six Athens wrestlers, both finished 1-2, and Blue Ridge was 0-4.

The following are the results for Waverly / SVEC and the NTL team:

South Seneca 52, Waverly / SVEC 27
SVEC wrestlers earned all five wins for the SVEC / Waverly entry in a 52-27 loss to South Seneca in the opening match of the day.

SVEC 7th-grader Osuman Duncanson earned the first win of the match with a fall in 2:29 over Teddy Raes at 107 pounds.

At 154 pounds, SVEC’s Alex Morris won by fall at 2:54 over Josh Wilkins, and SVEC’s Kyle Jelliff followed that up with a 3-1 win over Ryder Slayton at 162 pounds.

SVEC’s Mark Mullen and Mandell Davis received forfeits at 185 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Section IV 37, Waverly / SVEC 24
The Section IV team topped Waverly / SVEC, 37-24, in the second round of matches.

Duncanson edged Windsor’s Troy Hayes, 7-6, at 107 pounds for the Waverly / SVEC’s first win.

Trailing 16-3, Waverly / SVEC won four straight bouts, starting with a forfeit to Waverly’s Gaven Anthony at 130 pounds, to take a 21-16 lead.

Waverly’s Austin Kimble topped South Seneca’s Luke Dendis 8-3 at 137 pounds, and Waverly’s Ethan Stotler followed it up with a pin of Walton’s Will Pettit in 38 seconds at 145 pounds.

SVEC’s Alex Morris closed out the run with a 5-4 decision over Chenango Valley’s Nathan Lehr at 154 pounds.

Section IV won the five of the final six bouts to close out the match. SVEC’s Mark Mullen edged Windsor’s Brandon Butler, 3-2, for the lone win in that stretch.

Waverly / SVEC 41, NTL 30
Waverly / SVEC won six straight bouts in the middle weights to top the NTL squad 41-30 in the final match of the day.

Athens’ Kyler Setzer opened the match with a pin of Waverly’s Connor Stotler in 4:07 at 100 pounds, but Duncanson answered with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Athens’ Bailey Poarch at 107 pounds.

Athens freshman Gavin Bradley decked Waverly’s Cole Stanton in 16 seconds at 115 pounds to give the NTL team a 12-3 lead.

After Waverly’s Rylan LaForest received a forfeit at 130 pounds, Anthony pinned NEB’s Lucas Forbes at 2:59 to give Waverly / SVEC at 15-12 lead.

Kimble kept the streak going with a 10-2 major decision at 137 pounds, and Stotler won by fall in 3:25 at 145 pounds to make it 25-12.

Morris made it five in a row for Waverly / SVEC with a 12-2 major decision over Athens’ Zach Staufrsky, then Jelliff capped the run with a pin of Athens’ Ed Solomon in 2:27 at 162 pounds to extend the lead to 35-12.

Athens’ Alex West put the NTL back in the win column with a 17-3 major decision over Waverly’s Trevor Meyers at 173 pounds, and Athens standout David Galasso also logged a major decision in a 17-3 decision over Mullen at 185 pounds to close the gap to 35-20.

Davis clinched the win for Waverly / SVEC with a pin of NEB’s Noah Forbes in 3:36 at 197 pounds.

Arm Spin Army 58, NTL 19
Athens wrestlers earned three of the NTL’s four wins in a 58-19 loss to Arm Spin Army in its opening match of the day.

Bradley was taken down early, but used a pair of five-point moves in the final two periods to score a 10-2 major decision over Elmira’s Blake Brooks at 115 pounds.

Tioga’s David MacWhinnie, wrestling for Arm Spin Army, scored a pin of NTL’s Cole Sutton at 3:57 at 137 pounds to give ASA a 29-4 lead.

(MacWhinnie was 2-1 on the day, losing by fall to South Seneca’s Ethan Ferro in 2:38 in ASA’s 46-16 win, and scoring a 10-1 major decision victory over Blue Ridge’s Jordan Williams in ASA’s 58-15 win.)

West snapped ASA’s six-match win streak with a pin of Horseheads’ Jesse Storch in 2:52 at 173 pounds, and Galasso received a forfeit at 185 pounds.

NTL 49, Blue Ridge 24
The NTL took advantage of five forfeits in a 49-24 win over Blue Ridge.

Setzer opened the match with a 19-6 major decision over Blue Ridge’s Owen Burton at 100 pounds.

Bradley received a forfeit at 115 pounds to give the NTL a 10-6 lead, but (after a no contest at 123 pounds) Blue Ridge bounced back with wins by fall at 130 and 137 to take an 18-10 lead.

Later in the match, West scored a 7-2 win at 173 pounds to give the NTL a 25-24 lead.

The NTL received three consecutive forfeits, including one to Galasso at 185, and recorded a fall to end the match.
