ATHENS Athens scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take control en route to an 11-4 win over Potter-McKean in the consolation bracket of the District 15 Majors Division baseball playoffs.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, took advantage of a pair of P-M errors to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but P-M answered with two runs in the home half of the inning.
Athens scored three runs in the third inning after a two-out error kept the inning alive. Kaiden Hyjek delivered the key blow with a three-run triple to the right-center field gap, and scored on an RBI single by Josh Martin to make it 7-2.
P-M closed the gap to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but Athens added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Garrett Thetga stroked three singles, scored one run, and drove in a run, and Lucas Kraft doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI to pace Athens 11-hit attack.
Korey Miller singled twice, scored two runs and drove in a run in the win, while Martin doubled and singled, and drove in a run, Hyjek tripled, scored one run, and had three RBI, Evan Sickler doubled and scored two runs, Jacob scored two runs and knocked in a run, and Connor Mosher scored one run and drove in one run.
Kraft earned the win on the mound for Athens, allowing four runs two earned on four hits, while striking out three and walking two in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Jacob closed out the game with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief with two strikeouts and one walk.
Athens will travel to Southern Tioga Tuesday night in the consolation bracket semifinals.
