SAYRE — A trio of Sayre pitchers combined on a three-hitter in an 8-2 win over Southern Tioga here Tuesday evening in the opening game of pool play action in the District 15 Little League Juniors baseball playoffs at Ralph Hendershot Field in Riverfront Park.
Lucas Horton earned the win on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in four innings of work. He fanned eight and walked one.
Zach Garrity walked the first two batters he faced in the fifth inning, then struck out the side for a scoreless inning of relief, and David Northrop closed out the game with five strikeouts and a hit batsman in two hitless innings of relief.
Sayre, playing as the visiting team, scored two runs in the top of the first inning, then tacked on a run in the second and third innings.
Zach Garrity was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and Lucas Horton followed with a single. Garrity scored on a one-out groundout off the bat of Northrup, and Lucas Horton later stole home on a pick-off throw to second base.
In the second inning, Garrity smashed a one-out RBI double to plate Kannon VanDuzer, who walked to lead-off the frame.
Mason Houseknecht, who reached base on an error to lead off the third inning, scored on an RBI ground by VanDuzer in the third inning.
Lucas Horton, who allowed just one hit in the first three innings, retired the first two batters in the fourth, but an error extended the frame and Southern Tioga took advantage of the miscue and Horton’s only walk to plate two runs to trim the deficit to 4-2.
Sayre took advantage of a pair of Southern Tioga errors in the top of the sixth to score three runs to take a 7-2 lead.
Brayden Horton tripled and doubled, and drove in a run, and Garrity doubled, scored two runs, and drove in a run to pace Sayre at the plate, and VanDuzer singled, scored one run, and knocked in a run.
Lucas Horton singled and scored two runs in the win, while Northrop drove in two runs, and Mason Houseknecht and Dom Fabbri each scored one run.
Sayre returns to action Friday when it hosts Tioga-Lawrenceville.
