|DISTRICT 15 LITTLE LEAGUE (MINORS): ATHENS ADVANCES TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH 13-1 WIN OVER WELLSBORO (2018-07-05)

WELLSBORO — Athens erupted for 11 runs in the top of the third inning en route to a 13-1 four-inning win over Wellsboro in the semifinals of the District 15 Minors Division baseball playoffs.
Athens will now face the winner of Saturday’s consolation finals game between Tunkhannock and Wellsboro on Monday in the championship game.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and made it 2-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Kamdyn Wheeler.
Elijah Hobday and Connor Davidson each stroked two-RBI singles in the third-inning rally, and Graham Wanck added a run-scoring single.
Matthias Welles was the beneficiary of Athens’ offensive onslaught, allowing an unearned run on one hit in 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. He fanned eight and walked one.
Wanck singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Wheeler singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run to pace Athens at the plate, while Hobday and Davidson each singled scored one run, and had two RBI.
Duncan Thetga singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run in the win, while Karson Sipley singled and scored a run, Hicks scored two runs, and drove in a run, and Cooper Robinson crossed the plate twice.
Thetga retired the only batter he faced in relief of Welles.
