TULLY, N.Y. — Tioga junior Sam Taylor rallied from four strokes down after eight holes to win the Vesper Hills Golf Club stop of the Central N.Y. PGA Junior Tour here on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Taylor shot an 81 in tough conditions on the 7,000-yard, par-72 course to edge recent Westhill grad Josh Marshall by one stroke.
Danny DeHimer, a junior from Ava, N.Y., was even-par after eight holes and led Bremerton junior Adam Woodmansee by three strokes, and Taylor by four. Marshall was five strokes off the pace.
A double-bogey by DeHimer on the ninth hole trimmed his lead to one stroke over Woodmansee, and three over Taylor, who bogeyed the hole. Marshall also had a double-bogey and remained five strokes back at the turn.
Taylor parred the first five holes on the back nine to surge into the lead — two strokes ahead of Woodmansee, four ahead of DeHimer, and five in front of Marshall.
Marshall trimmed a stroke off Taylor’s lead on each of the next three holes to pull within two strokes and into a second-place tie with Woodmansee heading to the 18th tee.
On 18, Marshall recorded a par, but Taylor found the cup with his bogey put to seal the victory.
Woodmansee finished third with an 83, and DeHimer was fourth with an 85.
