OSWEGO, N.Y. — Former Waverly High School athletic standout and coaching legend Al Geppert passed away at The Manor at 81.
Geppert was a three-sport star at Waverly High School. He was a member of two Section IV championship teams in basketball in 1951-52 and '52-53.
He went on to letter in basketball and baseball at St. Lawrence University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He also received a master's degree from Ithaca College.
Geppert taught physical education and coached basketball for 33 years at Waverly, Thomas A. Edison and Ticonderoga high schools. He also coached baseball, football and golf.
Known as "Coach Gep," he accumulated 427 wins on the court. That ranks him fifth in Section IV and 85th in the state through the 2016-17 season, according to the New York State Sportswriters Association.
He was inducted into the Section IV Hall of Fame in 1998, the Waverly High School Hall of Fame in 2001, the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
A memorial fund has been established in Geppert’s honor to benefit Waverly High School student-athletes. Donations may be sent to the Alan J. Geppert Trust, c/o Eric J. Geppert, trustee, 2379 Chesapeake St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20008.
