SAYRE — After three losses to perennial District 4 playoff teams, Wellsboro snapped its season-opening losing streak with a 13-0 win over Sayre here Saturday night in NTL boys soccer action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.

Sayre co-coaches Austin Scheider and Ken Bentley were pleased with their team’s effort, if not the outcome.

“I was super proud of the effort, (especially) the effort and the will in the first half. It was great,” said Scheider. We just need to bring that everyday and we would have a winning record right now.

“We are coming along,” added Scheider. “We are just a very young team trying to piece it all together.

“I’m very proud of the effort of our kids tonight,” said Bentley. “The score doesn’t match their resolve and effort tonight. They should hold their heads high.”

Wellsboro, which opened the season with losses to Midd-West, Jersey Shore, and Athens, had a 34-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.

Will Poirer netted a hat trick in the first half, and Brett Rudy scored two of his four goals before the intermission to help the Green Hornets to a 5-0 halftime lead.

Joe Grabb ended the game with two goals and three assists, and Kaiden Mann had two assists and one goal.

Sophomore Conner Young recorded 17 saves in net for Sayre.

Sayre, now 0-4, hosts Towanda Wednesday.
