SOUTHPORT, N.Y. — High-scoring Laurel Vargas scored both goals in Notre Dame’s 2-0 win over Sayre here Saturday night in the championship game of the Notre Dame Tournament.
Midway through the first half, Vargas beat a pair of Sayre defenders in the box, and then blasted a shot past Lady Redskin keeper Camry Lane to the far post for the game’s first goal.
The Lady Crusaders continued to pressure the Sayre net for the remainder of the first half, and early in the second half.
Just six minutes after the halftime intermission, Vargas converted on a penalty kick to make it 2-0.
Notre Dame had a 21-7 shots-on-goal advantage, and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Lane recorded 19 saves in net for Sayre, while Ana Milazzo registered seven saves for Notre Dame.
Sayre, now 2-1, returns to action Tuesday at Towanda in a 6 p.m. start.
