|IAC BOYS SOCCER: NEWARK VALLEY BLANKS WAVERLY, 6-0 (2018-09-11)
Valley Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Five different Newark Valley players found the net in a 6-0 win over Waverly here Tuesday afternoon in IAC boys soccer action.
“We played tentative and on our heels in the first half,” said Waverly coach Eric Ryck. “Newark Valley pressured us with quick ball movement and we ended up chasing quite a bit and gave up goals early.
“We got better in the second half, pressured the ball quicker on defense and we were able to slow them down a bit,” noted Ryck. “Our keeper, Cameron McIsaac, was hard to beat with 11 of his 24 saves coming in the second half.
“It was a tough loss for us, I really feel these boys are capable of challenging teams more than we showed tonight, but we are young and we are learning every game what we need to do to be better tomorrow than we were today,” added Ryck.
Noah Shiel scored two goals for the Cardinals, while John Sminnons, Sam Durand, Dan Cowulich, and Steve Cowulich each scored one goal.
Newark Valley had a 24-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
McIsaac recorded 18 saves in net for the Wolverines, while Steve Cowulich had two saves for the Cardinals.
Waverly, now 0-3, returns to action Thursday night when it hosts Notre Dame.
