Valley Sports Report
WYALUSING — After splitting the first two sets, Wyalusing won a pair of close decisions to pull out a 3-1 win over Athens here Tuesday night in NTL Large School volleyball action.

Wyalusing won the first set 25-23, but the Lady Wildcats bounced back with a 25-21 win in the second set. The Lady Rams closed out the match with wins of 25-22 and 25-23.

“The girls played amazing tonight,” said first-year Athens coach Heather Hanson. “As you can tell by the scores they were close, intense, exciting games. It was great volleyball to watch.

“I heard that Wyalusing's crowd can be really loud and full of spirit, which is awesome, but the girls came out and quieted the crowd down,” she noted. “The Athens JV team sat behind the varsity and I think they were even louder than the Wyalusing crowd.

Senior Amelia Martin had a big night with 28 setter assists, 22 kills, 12 digs, two blocks, and two service aces.

“Amelia Martin was a great leader tonight, not only with her great talent, but encouraging everyone and pushing everyone to do their best,” said Hanson.

Leah Liechty had 10 kills, three blocks, and three digs for the Lady Wildcats, while Kayleigh Miller had 37 assists, six digs, and five kills, Paige McCarty had nine digs, two kills, and one block, Megan McDuffee registered 12 kills, and Christian Bard added five kills.

“Leah Liechty had some stellar blocks tonight,” said Hanson.

With two regulars missing from the Athens rotation tonight, Hanson had to dip into the JV ranks.

“We were without Haley Barry and Cassidy Stackpole tonight,” said Hanson.

“Taylor Field, who is a setter on JV, stepped into the role of libero tonight,” she noted. “That girl did not let a ball hit the ground without all out effort.

“Kylie Jayne stepped into the role of outside hitter for us, and she did amazing,” added Hanson.

Taylor Field recorded 15 digs and Kylie Jayne had seven digs, and 3 kills.

Athens, now 1-1, returns to action Thursday at Cowanesque Valley.
