SAYRE — Sophomore Cody Vanbenthuysen netted a hat trick, and freshman Mason Hughey scored two goals and doled out three assists to lead Sayre to its first win of the season, a 6-1 decision over Towanda here Wednesday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.

“It was a good win for the program.,” said Sayre co-coach Ken Bentley. “The kids deserve this win.  They have been working hard. I’m very proud of their effort tonight.”

Vanbenthuysen scored the game’s first goal with 17:59 left in the first half, then made it 2-0 with 5:43 remaining.

Hughey found the net 5 1/2 minutes into the second half to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead.

Sayre scored three goals in three minutes to put the game away late.

Vanbenthuysen scored with 10:27 remaining, then junior Camden Wheeler scored with 8:05 left. Just 44 seconds later, Hughey capped the scoring with his second goal.

Towanda broke up the shutout with 2:31 left in the game.

Sophomore Nic Bentley had two assists for the Redskins.

Sayre had a 27-14 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Conner Young had 13 saves for Sayre, and Nic Ficarro added one.

Sayre, now 1-4, hosts Galeton Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
